FAQs - Red Wing Maker

Almost! We are working closely with Minnesota State College Southeast and Red Wing Ignite to bring our community a MakerSpace. View the press release.

The Red Wing Makers is a set of local individuals who operate a MakerSpace at Minnesota State College Southeast in conjunction with Red Wing Ignite in Red Wing.

A MakerSpace, sometimes also referred to as hackerspaces, hackspaces, and fablabs are creative, DIY spaces where people can gather to create, invent, and learn. In libraries they often have 3D printers, software, electronics, craft and hardware supplies and tools, and more.

A Maker is an individual who can, simply put, create something using various skill sets. And in this case, the Maker's skills can often times be enhanced at a MakerSpace, such as The Red Wing MakerSpace. Where fellow Makers share ideas, skills and tools together to achieve a better end.

CNC machines, 3D printers, CAD workstations, soldering stations and a classroom area will be available when the Red Wing MakerSpace opens. We are working to compile an exhaustive list.

Yes! Anyone can join, minors under the age of 18 will need to have parental consent.

We hold monthly meeting, which are typically open to the public. Please feel free to join us.

There will be. Most MakerSpaces require a member free to help offset the cost of operating a MakerSpace.

Currently The Red Wing Makers do not impose any member fees or dues.

That depends. Many MakerSpaces often required additional money to operate a specific machine. This may be due to consumables, the high cost of the machine or tool. There are numerous reasons why there may be an additional cost.

At this time The Red Wing MakerSpace is not imposing any additional fees for use of equipment.

Possibly. We encourage all donations, it's a wonderful way to help keep member and operating costs down. However, we can not accept all donations. There are many reasons why we may be unable to accept your donation. First please check our wish list, we may be in need of your donation. Or feel free to contact us and ask, we'll be happy to help.

Probably. We are currently looking into those options. But please do not make a donation decision based on the likely hood of a tax credit. For now, please either donate and not expect a tax credit or wait until we have the necessary forms available.

Yes and no. We are currently operating with an agreement from Red Wing Ignite as a 503c.  In time we hope to secure our own non-profit status. We are very thankful to Red Wing Ignite for their generosity.

Depends... How you define, near? Minneapolis and Rochester both have thier own respective Maker Space(s). We are working with these Spaces to help our Space open. In time we hope to offer a reciprocal agreement between nearby MakerSpaces.
